American Oncology Network, LLC (AON) Introduces Specialty Oral Oncolytic Pharmacy

Community Oncology Patients Benefit from AON In-House Pharmacy Services

Fort Myers, Fla. (March 25, 2019) The American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), an alliance of physicians and seasoned healthcare leaders, provides a unique array of support services to its affiliated community-based oncology practices, including in-house specialty pharmacy services. The AON Pharmacy streamlines the process of filling prescriptions for cancer patients who are being treated with oral oncolytic medications. According to the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), approximately 25% to 35% of all cancer drugs are currently available in pill form and that percentage is increasing each year.

AON CEO Brad Prechtl, MBA, said, “Through the American Oncology Network, community oncology practices across the nation now have access to practice-proven solutions that bring tremendous value and benefit to their patients. The AON Pharmacy is a prime example of this. Pharmacy staff members not only handle the complicated insurance authorization process, they also work with patients and educate them about potential side effects of these powerful cancer drugs and ensure that patients are compliant and understand how to take prescribed medications.”

Director of Pharmacy Ray Bailey added, Our pharmacists are experts in oncology medications and they are available to speak with both patients and physicians, as needed. Through our electronic medical record (EMR), AON pharmacists can view a patient’s chart and then work directly with the patient’s oncologist to best manage any side effects of the oral therapies.”

AON Board Member Dr. William Harwin pointed out, “When someone is diagnosed with cancer, he or she doesn’t want to wait several weeks to receive prescribed medications; yet, many of the smaller community oncology practices in the AON network don’t have the infrastructure to provide speedy access to oral oncology drugs. Through the AON Pharmacy, which ships directly to patients’ homes, usually within 48 to 72 hours, patients have easier, more convenient and much faster access to the medications they need.”

American Oncology Network, LLC Simplifies Value-Based Care for Community Oncology

Practices Benefit from Industry-Leading Care Management Services and OCM Designation

FORT MYERS, FL (MARCH 19, 2019) – Through the American Oncology Network (AON), LLC, community oncology practices across the nation are now able to leverage the expertise and scale developed by the nation’s largest independent community oncology practice to actualize value-based care without managing the growing complexities of a changing healthcare landscape. AON’s care management services are delivering positive results for its partner practices that have reported reduced costs, improved outcomes and enhanced patient satisfaction directly related to AON’s proven infrastructure.

New AON practices are immediately eligible to participate in the Oncology Care Model (OCM) and implement the AON Care Management program. In 2018, AON adopted OCM and implemented the model through Care Management, its existing value-based approach. This growing team-based methodology ensures clear communication, coordination and cohesion of patient care. It also optimizes treatment outcomes and quality of life through a three-phase program that includes care navigation, active care management and survivorship.
“Our proven value-based care model has allowed us to continually grow our network and increase patient satisfaction while reducing unnecessary hospital admissions and emergency room visits,” said Sarah Cevallos, AON Chief Revenue Cycle Officer. “At AON, we’re leveraging the same value-based model that has driven results for the nation’s largest independent community oncology practice for several years. Offering this expertise and scale will help practices across the nation thrive in an increasingly complex healthcare ecosystem.”

AON’s model alleviates challenges for its partner practices by disengaging them from a linear process.  This strategic approach allows practices to focus on patients while AON’s experts handle the cumbersome administrative and financial complexities involved with the transition to value-based care.

“We handle the complexities of having to manage their practice day in and day out so they can focus on patient care,” said Brad Prechtl, AON Chief Executive Officer.

Because the OCM incentivizes high-quality, coordinated care, AON reinvests the savings into enhanced patient care across its network for services that may not be available elsewhere, while controlling costs.

“You have to adapt to the market forces going on outside,” said Dr. Rangappa Rajendra, founder of Oncology/Hematology of Loudoun and Reston in Virginia. “But ultimately the most important thing when you are in a patient’s room you have to make sure you do it right.”

AON’s collaborative approach and physician-led model allows community practices to thrive while maintaining local leadership and autonomy. This ultimately allows physicians to focus on what matters most – providing the highest quality care for patients.
