American Oncology Network Names Dr. Ryan Olson as Medical Director of the In-House Pathology Laboratory

Dr. Ryan Olson joins AON effective June 26, 2023.

FORT MYERS, Fla., July 5, 2023American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), one of the nation’s fastest growing networks of community oncology practices, is pleased to announce Ryan Olson, MD, has joined as the new medical director of AON’s pathology laboratory, effective June 26.

Dr. Olson received his medical degree from Albany Medical College (AMC) in Albany, New York, and completed a residency at the University of California San Diego and AMC. His training continued with a fellowship in surgical pathology and hematopathology at AMC. Dr. Olson is Board-certified in anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and hematopathology.

“I look forward to joining AON and helping to drive more improved health outcomes via the pathology lab,” said Dr. Olson. “The reports generated through the lab play an important role in the patients’ care plans and clinical outcomes, and I am honored to be a part of AON’s pathology team who are all passionate about elevating patient care and delivering the best services available to physicians and their patients.”

AON’s in-house pathology laboratory serves over 100 physicians in 18 states and has earned the “Golden Standard” certification from the College of American Pathologists. The state-of-the-art facility, which is headquartered in Fort Myers, is staffed by a team of highly specialized laboratory scientists, hematopathologists and surgical pathologists. Because of the design of the network, AON physicians have access to a wide range of testing services that can be done through the in-house laboratory including histology, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, fish panel, fish individual probes and molecular tests.

“AON pathology laboratory is integrated into patient care as staff is readily available to answer questions from physicians and patients,” said AON Chief Medical Officer Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD. “Additionally, our lab uses Lean and Six Sigma tools to improve our processes and test turnaround times so that diagnoses can be made earlier, easing patient anxiety as well as ensuring necessary treatments are not delayed.”

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Olson to AON,” said AON Chief Executive Officer Todd Schonherz. “Pathology is an integral part of oncology care and clinical research initiatives. It remains our top priority for investments so that our patients continue to receive the quality care they deserve.”

Local Medical Oncologist’s Co-Authored Research Presented at American Association of Cancer Research Annual Meeting

Low Country Cancer Care physician presented findings on desmoplastic melanoma.

SAVANNAH, Ga., June 19, 2023 Local medical oncologist of Low Country Cancer Care (LCCC), a partner practice of American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), Dr. George Negrea co-authored a research paper that was selected and presented at the 2023 American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting, which was held on April 14 through the 19.

The paper titled “High Response Rate with Single Agent Anti-PD-1 in Patients with Metastatic Desmoplastic Melanoma” was a collaboration between 25 physicians. The research explored the response rate of patients with desmoplastic melanoma who were being treated with the drug pembrolizumab, an immune inhibitor designed to keep cancer cells from suppressing the immune system. The findings reported that patients respond well to the single-agent PD-1 blockade with this specific drug.

To view the research and findings, visit abstractsonline.com/pp8/#!/10828/presentation/10250.

“With an overall incidence rate of two cases per one million individuals, desmoplastic melanoma accounts for less than 4% of all primary cutaneous melanomas,” said Negrea. “Its clinical behavior differs from other subtypes of melanoma in that it is frequently amelanotic and usually found in highly sun exposed areas. Pathologic characteristics include high tumor burden and absence of BRAF and NRAS hotspot mutations. The SWOG S 1512, which I co-authored, demonstrated that patients with metastatic desmoplastic melanomas are exceptional responders to single agent anti-PD–1 therapy. The study showed an 89% partial and complete response to single agent immune checkpoint inhibitor. Based on this data, the pathologic subtype of desmoplastic melanoma can be used as a predictive biomarker for response to single agent pembrolizumab.”

“Participating in research studies is crucial in advancing cancer care and providing excellent patient care that every individual deserve,” said Katie Goodman, AON’s vice president of clinical research. “I encourage AON’s physicians to take part in the investigation of cancer treatments, thereby making AON a top institution and contributor in cancer research.”

LCCC is a partner practice of AON, one of the fastest-growing networks of community oncology practices that work to deliver local access to quality and affordable cancer care. The practice joined the network in late 2020. As a partner, LCCC has access to multiple resources, support and services, such as an in-house specialty pharmacy and financial aid assistance for patients, so that physicians can focus on patient care.

American Oncology Network expands into Texas with the opening of Lone Star Oncology.

GEORGETOWN, Texas, June 12, 2023 American Oncology Network, LLC (AON) announced Texas as the newest operating state with the opening of the community oncology clinic Lone Star Oncology (LSO), which is located at 3201 South Austin Avenue, Suite 315 in Georgetown. The clinic is now open and accepting patients with all types of cancer and blood disorders.

The clinic is led by Board-certified medical oncologist Brian Shimkus, MD, who brings over 20 years of experience in healthcare. He received his medical degree from Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia, did an internal medicine internship and residency at the University of Virginia Hospital, and completed a medical oncology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin Cancer Center.

“I am eager to continue serving my community not only as a physician but by opening a clinic dedicated to delivering high-quality cancer services to patients in need,” said Shimkus. “We are honored to provide care that is patient-centered and focused on treating the whole person not just the cancer.”

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Shimkus to the network and look forward to supporting Lone Star Oncology and their patients,” said AON Chief Development Officer Anthony Belott. “Cancer takes a toll on patients in many ways. It is our goal to alleviate some of the pressures, and we can do that by ensuring patients can receive the treatments they need without needing to travel long distances.”

LSO is a partner practice of AON, a rapidly growing national network of community-based oncology practices. The network is comprised of Board-certified physicians across the United States who join to ensure accessible and affordable cancer care and therapies are available at a local level to remove the need for patients to travel long distances to receive care and reduce the costs associated with the care received.

AON supports hometown practices, their physicians and patients to ensure the latest in cancer care and treatments are readily available and accessible at the local level. Through the partnership, LSO will provide multiple services to patients such as infusion therapy, centralized laboratory and pathology, oral cancer medications and financial counseling.

“Expanding into Texas is an opportunity for us to continue working toward advocating for accessible and affordable cancer care in these new communities,” said AON Chief Executive Officer Todd Schonherz. “Our mission at AON is to bridge the cancer care gap, and by supporting homegrown practices like Lone Star Oncology, we help patients receive care and treatments in the community they love and know.”

American Oncology Network Announces List of Research Studies Presented at the ASCO 2023 Annual Meeting

AON physicians and leaders share their latest cancer findings with fellow thought leaders at the annual conference.

FORT MYERS, Fla., June 6, 2023American Oncology Network, LLC (AON) announced that six research papers, co-authored by AON physicians and the vice president of pharmacy operations, were accepted and presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Meeting, which was held on June 2 and ended on June 6.

The following abstracts were selected either for poster discussions or presentations during the conference:

  • Ralph V. Boccia, MD, FACP, of The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, co-authored a study on advanced colorectal cancer:
    • Randomized phase 2 study of DKN-01 plus FOLFIRI/FOLFOX and bevacizumab versus FOLFIRI/FOLFOX and bevacizumab as second-line treatment of advanced colorectal cancer (DeFianCe) (Abstract TPS275).
  • Arvind Chaudhry, MD, PhD, of Summit Cancer Centers, co-authored four studies:
    • Preliminary results of a phase 1/2, first-in-human, open-label, dose escalation study of ZL-1211 (anti-Claudin 18.2 mAb) in patients with unresectable or metastatic solid tumors (Abstract 2537).
    • BELLWAVE-003: A phase 2 dose escalation, confirmation, and cohort expansion study of nemtabrutinib in hematologic malignancies (Abstract TPS7593).
    • XMT-1660: A phase 1b trial of a B7-H4 targeted antibody drug conjugate (ADC) in breast, endometrial, and ovarian cancers (Abstract TPS3154).
    • waveLINE-006: A phase 2 study of the safety and efficacy of zilovertamab vedotin as monotherapy or in combination in patients (pts) with aggressive and indolent B-cell malignancies (Abstract TPS7595).
  • Melody Chang, RPh, MBA, BCOP, AON’s vice president of pharmacy operations, co-authored a study on biosimilar uptake:
    • Biosimilar uptake and cost savings analysis before and after implementation of a pharmacist-driven substitution program within a National Community Oncology Network: One-year follow-up (Abstract 6516).

“I am proud that our abstract has been selected for discussion at this year’s ASCO annual meeting,” said Chang. “It is important for a community oncology practice to have a strategy in adopting biosimilars so that we can stay competitive and be able to deliver quality care at the same time as controlling costs. Our study results demonstrate that AON’s Pharmacist-Driven Biosimilar Substitution Program has not only increased the adoption of biosimilars but has also significantly reduced costs for patients, payers and providers.”

“I am extremely proud to represent the AON network at ASCO with four accepted abstracts,” said Chaudhry. “I strongly feel that clinical trials need to be available for our patients in the community setting. This fits with the broader AON mission.”

“Our physicians and leaders are at the forefront of cancer care, committed to discovering new findings that improve treatments for not only their patients but the millions of Americans facing cancer diagnoses,” said AON Chief Executive Officer Todd Schonherz. “Congratulations to Dr. Boccia, Dr. Chaudhry and Ms. Chang. To have their studies featured at the ASCO Annual Meeting is an honor not only for them but for all of AON.”

The ASCO Annual Meeting brings together today’s top leaders in healthcare. Over the course of several days, attendees can attend over 200 sessions that support the year’s theme of Partnering with Patients: The Cornerstone of Cancer Care and Research created by Dr. Eric Winer, president of ASCO.

“Cancer is constantly evolving and that creates challenges for physicians who are working to develop the most effective therapy regime for their patients,” said AON Research Committee Chairman Dr. Boccia, Board-certified medical oncologist and hematologist at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. “It is our duty to remain vigilant in research and education so that we can provide patients with quality care and treatments. The physicians within our network are dedicated to closing the cancer care gap, which starts by researching and then sharing the latest findings in cancer.”

Several of AON’s practices are research sites, including four that are strategic research sites for the Sarah Cannon Research Institute and six additional practices offering diverse clinical trials to their patients. AON practices actively enroll patients in more than 150 clinical trials. These services are offered at a community level and close to where patients live, which has been beneficial to patients’ overall cancer journey.

“At AON, our goal is to bring high-quality cancer care and treatments to all communities and that includes cancer research and clinical trials,” said Boccia. “When these resources and support are available in the communities where patients live, we can continue to serve patients with the best care possible.”

Hope Cancer Care of Nevada Continues Patient Advocacy Initiatives with the Launch of the CPAN Chapter and Other Supportive Efforts

Local oncology clinic continues to drive patient-centered care forward.

LAS VEGAS, April 24, 2023 –  Hope Cancer Care of Nevada (HCCN), community-based oncology practice and partner practice of American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), announced its patient advocacy initiatives including launching a local CPAN chapter and continuing to support cancer patients and survivors with dedicated resources.

“Patient-centered care and decision-making are how we do what is right for our patients and their families,” said HCCN Board-certified medical oncologist Raja S. Mehdi, MD. “At our clinic, we strive to deliver the highest level of care our patients deserve as well as be their advocate and voice. We are excited to be expanding our patient advocacy efforts to launch a local CPAN chapter and continue to honor our cancer survivors along the way.”

HCCN will be the first CPAN chapter in Nevada and joins over 30 practices across 17 states. The Community Oncology Alliance (COA) Patient Advocacy Network (CPAN) is a nationally recognized patient advocacy group that works to preserve access to community-based cancer clinics. The organization brings to light national and local healthcare policy regulations and issues that have the potential to impact patient care.

“Hope Cancer Care of Nevada helps patients receive state-of-the-art, personalized care close to their homes. All too often, they’re the ones that suffer the most when local, affordable cancer care is threatened by misguided government policies,” said COA Director of Patient Advocacy and Education Rose Gerber. “It is important that those involved at all levels of healthcare truly understand what community oncology practices do and go through. We are excited to welcome Dr. Mehdi and his practice to the network.”

“We are elated to learn of Hope Cancer Care of Nevada’s joining of CPAN,” said AON Chief Medical Officer Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD. “Patient care does not only occur in a patient room or infusion room nor is it only present when a patient enters the clinic until the time they leave. It is an ongoing mission to understand what is happening locally and nationally in healthcare and then ensure that patient care remains the sole priority. The growth of such advocacy networks like CPAN is only one path to changing the landscape of healthcare for the better.”

In addition to instituting the CPAN chapter, HCCN continues to support cancer survivors with a Cancer Patient Survivor Night at the Ballpark event on May 11 from 6:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. where additional proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation. HCCN also hosts the monthly Hope Care Support Group for patients who have any cancer type. Those attending are given a safe space to share their experiences and gain support.

“It is our duty to provide our patients with not only medical care and services but mental support and guidance,” said Mehdi. “The resources we provide at the clinic are designed to help patients along their cancer journey and to hopefully provide some comfort that they are not alone in their fight.”

HCCN has served the Las Vegas and Pahrump communities for more than 13 years, treating various cancer types and offering holistic cancer care and therapies.

HCCN joined AON in July 2019. For more information about AON, visit aoncology.com/. For more information about HCCN, visit hccnevada.com/.

ASHEVILLE, N.C., April 3, 2023 Messino Cancer Centers (Messino), partner practice of American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), announced the expansion of the medical team to include Board-certified neuro-oncologist Jeanette Pueschel Larson, MD. Dr. Larson is available to see patients at the Asheville clinic starting today.

“We are excited to have Dr. Larson joining our physicians’ team here at Messino,” said Martin Palmeri, MD, MBA, Board-certified medical oncologist at Messino. “Our goal is to provide comprehensive cancer care and therapies so that we can better serve our patients and their unique needs. Dr. Larson’s specialty is of great value to us and our patients. Welcome, Dr. Larson to the Messino team.”

Dr. Larson earned her medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School and went on to complete a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuro-oncology at the Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She then completed a working fellowship in neurological rehabilitation at Valley Physician Medicine & Rehabilitation in Phoenix, Arizona. Through her extensive education and training, she is experienced in caring for patients with aggressive brain, spine and nervous system tumors.

“I am passionate about providing patient-first care that is evidence-based and being an advocate for my patients and their families,” said Larson. “Messino Cancer Centers practices patient-first care continuously through every interaction and decision made. Joining the Messino team is an honor, and I look forward to helping them elevate cancer care in the community.”

Messino is a partner practice of AON, a network of community-based oncology practices across the nation. The partnership grants the practice access to a variety of critical support services and resources, such as an in-house specialty pharmacy and financial aid assistance for patients, so that physicians are alleviated of the burdens that come with running a full-time practice and can focus on patient care.

“Messino joined AON in January 2020, and it has been our pleasure to support them as they have continued to grow and expand their physician team,” said Dr. Stephen “Fred” Divers, AON’s chief medical officer. “We are excited to welcome Dr. Larson to AON and look forward to her contributions to Messino and the network.”

“Dr. Larson is a wonderful addition to the Messino team,” said Todd Schonherz, AON’s chief executive officer. “She exemplifies the patient-first care approach that we are proud to offer across all of our practices, and her specialty in neuro-oncology will help the practice provide more tailored cancer care to patients who, unfortunately, are facing these types of tumors. Congratulations to the practice for expanding their team.”

American Oncology Network Continues to Close Cancer Care Gap in Community-Based Oncology

AON’s dedication to closing the cancer care gap is evident in its 2022 achievements.

FORT MYERS, Fla., Mar. 22, 2023American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), nationwide network supporting the viability of community-based oncology practices in the United States, achieved key outcomes in 2022 that have paved the way for increased growth and influence in closing the cancer care gap.

“Closing the cancer care gap is an initiative toward addressing healthcare equity and ensuring every patient has access to quality care and services,” said Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD, AON’s chief medical officer who is also an active board member of the Community Oncology Alliance (COA) and co-chairman of COA’s annual conference. “At AON, we are constantly driving toward reducing the disparities in cancer care. Supporting community oncology practices is one avenue to keep cancer care accessible and affordable for millions of Americans. These homegrown clinics benefit the community by offering the same quality care and services found in hospitals locally, reducing patients’ need to travel far for treatments, and keeping costs of care low when compared to being treated at a hospital.”

In 2022, AON achieved the following outcomes, directly influencing the cancer care gap:

  • Processed 1.25 million clinical tests through the in-house laboratory.
  • Secured $47.56 million in total pharmacy patient assistance for 3,878 patients.
  • Sourced over $3.5 million in drug replacement and $52.8 million in co-pay assistance for over 4,700 patients.
  • Assisted in enrolling 263 patients into clinical trials and offered more than 150 clinical trials throughout the network.
  • Reduced healthcare costs (patient and payer savings and provider cost avoidance) by $56.21 million by using biosimilar drugs when appropriate.

“Working toward healthcare equity is a global shift and team effort from all involved in healthcare and across disciplines,” said Todd Schonherz, AON’s chief executive offer. “While it is a large-scale effort, we can make our impact on improving this area. Our goal is not met until accessible and equitable cancer care is available to all. We celebrate our 2022 achievements but recognize that we must build upon what we have created to help more people overcome the barriers that keep them from receiving care.”

AON has dedicated 2023 to driving equity forward in oncology care. Such initiatives include delivering precision medicine across its practice sites and advocating for it as a standard of care; adopting next-generation sequencing to identify genetic tumor mutations to better align therapies for treatment; and providing structure and organization to clinical records and genomic data.

AON will be attending the Community Oncology Conference, hosted by Community Oncology Alliance (COA) on March 23 and 24. Company leaders and representatives will be available for more information on how AON can help practices stay independent and thrive and close the cancer care gap in their communities. Additionally, AON’s Chief Executive Officer Schonherz and Chief Pharmacy and Clinical Services Officer James Gilmore will serve as panelists for two conference sessions. Messino Cancer Centers Expands Physician Team With Medical Oncologist Eric Luk

American Oncology Network partner practice welcomes the new medical oncologist to the physician team.

ASHEVILLE, N.C., March 1, 2023 Messino Cancer Centers (Messino), one of the largest partner practices of the fast-growing community oncology organization American Oncology Network, LLC (AON), expanded its physician team to include Board-certified medical oncologist Eric Luk, MD. Dr. Luk joined today and is accepting new patients at the Asheville and Sylva locations.

“We are excited to grow our team and have Dr. Luk join us,” said Christopher Chay, MD, medical oncologist at Messino. “His approach to patient care aligns with how we run our practice, and his experienced background in oncology will be invaluable to our patients.”

Luk attended Tulane University School of Medicine, receiving his medical degree. He completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School and a hematology and oncology fellowship at Ochsner Health. He is a specialist in thoracic oncology and carries experience treating various aggressive cancers including tumors of the head, neck and brain.

“I focus on patient-centered care first and foremost, finding ways to improve my patients’ quality of life,” said Luk. “By educating my patients on their diagnosis and offering insights into recommended therapies, I can help them make more informed health decisions. I am honored to be a part of my patients’ cancer journey. I look forward to helping Asheville and the surrounding communities and joining the physicians at Messino Cancer Centers.”

“Congratulations to Messino Cancer Centers for expanding their team,” said AON Chief Medical Officer Stephen “Fred” Divers, MD. “Dr. Luk’s experience is impressive, and we welcome him to our vast network of skilled community oncologists and look forward to his contributions.”

Messino has been a partner practice of AON since January 2020. By being a part of the network, the practice has access to support and resources that single-site practices lack, such as an in-house specialty pharmacy for oral oncolytic medications and various administrative services, allowing the physicians to focus on patient-centered care.

“AON is comprised of skilled oncologists who are passionate about elevating health and access to care in their communities, and Dr. Luk is no exception,” said AON Chief Executive Officer Todd Schonherz. “I am always eager to learn of new oncologists joining one of our practices because it shows the viability of community-based oncology practices. We cannot succeed in our mission without the commitment of our physicians. Welcome, Dr. Luk.”
